ROO ADVENTURES 2008
Yeah, yeah. I know. Here we go again! Well, why not? OLD MILL STREAM - APRIL So, off to Old Mill Stream the first weekend of April to hook up with our RV.Net pals. Just a normal weekend of friends, food and the Shady Maple of course! Noticeably absent was Scott. He had other stuff going on with the fire department and friends. Gonna miss him!
EAGLES PEAK - APRIL The CG sponsors an annual Public Service Weekend. A large group of fellow Officers from my PD as well as other campers from RV.Net made the weekend enjoyable.
ELK NECK SP - APRIL I really like Elk Neck. It is close by and very nice. W/E/S hook-ups make it more appealing as well. Got to put up my new 22' flag pole too.
DRUMMER BOY - MAY RV.NET GETTYSBURG RALLY V The weather was not cooperative and many outside activities were curtailed. Sadly Frank's special BBQ Shrimp fest Saturday night was interrupted several times by the rain.
ELK NECK SP - JUNE Another trip to a fav campground. The only thing that made it less enjoyable was the A/C conked out upon my arrival. Since it was a four night trip and the temps were in the 90s it got ugly quick. A trip to Wal-Mart for really 'big' fans helped but only once late night hit did the ROO become more comfortable. We checked out the Bay for the first time and found the water clear and very warm. Father's Day weekend was spent yet again in a CG! Even though the site was next to the bath house it was really spacious with shade as well.
SPRING GULCH - JUNE Another foray to the land of Lancaster County and the Amish. The campground was rather empty given it was Fourth of July week. Who knows if gas prices or the economy in general was the issue? Alex and I had a great 'super site' and lots of privacy. 100 cable channels (literally) helped ease the boredom a bit. However, Verizon's lack of cellular and broadband coverage even off the campground was a concern and made for a rougher week of communicating with the rest of the world. Hmmmm? Isn't that why we used to go camping! Hah! Scott came up to spend two nights with us and why not? I paid for dinner at the Shady Maple, gas and he had a place to sleep. It was nice to have him in the ROO for the first time all season.
CHERRYSTONE ONCE AGAIN IN JULY! Alex could only stay for a week but Scott and I got to hang out for two. Met some nice folks, other family members came down and our seasonal neighbors across from us were great to see again. The weather was great despite several nasty t-showers with high winds and teeming rain. If some of the pics look like other years I cannot change the landscape or the Sun! Well, all the piers have been replaced so there is something different! I will be on the same site four years running for many reasons! Getting in between the trees is challenging but that is half the fun! Also hadn't 'donated' any stuff to others upon my departure for some time but getting out at 0730 does have it's consequences. Scott was responsible for the water hose but I am still the Head HTT Honcho. So, we left a short length of hose, Y adapter and a nozzle for someone else. :)
Check out the before and after pics of Alex's bike. Scott used it one time and one minute later a six year old girl ran into the bike. He said she really was not going that fast. Hah! I think not. In less than a week I paid over $115.00 to have two rims replaced. Different bikes, both rear wheels and both operated by Scott when things went awry! Ack!
2ND ANNUAL NY HTT RALLY TALL PINES CG - BAINBRIDGE, NY Another great RV.Net trip to Upstate NY. This time in the Catskills along the upper end of the Susquehanna River. Five of us from first rally were able to hook up again five more RV friends. Sadly, five other familes had to cancel out. It would have been awesome to have fifteen folks at this. The daily weather pattern was not cooperative as a low pressure system fell into place along the mountains and never really left us for days causing rain showers on and off all day and night. The temps were in the low 50s most nights as well. Some of us made a trip to Cooperstown and checked out the MLB Hall of Fame. That was interesting.
LABOR DAY - EAGLE'S PEAK Just a great weekend although with an auspicious and crazy start. K-9 Max is now part of our entourage. He came into the fold only two days before camping and did really good at the campground. He did not bark at people or bikes. When he did bark at another dog it was playful. Considering he was running the street, had no name and no clue about camping, it went quite well!
2ND ANNUAL ELK NECK SP RALLY - SEPTEMBER
Despite lousy weather, threats of a tropical storm and many cancellations/no-shows more than ten of our RV.Net families made it to one of our fav campgrounds. A Hawaiian theme made it entertaining as well. Yes, even the Limbo was present! Max (the dog) was over-stimulated by way too many other dogs who were older and more mature when it came barking and foolishness. However, he really does love camping. I spent six nights there and Alex hung out four nights. The highlight of my Saturday night was winning a $150.00 gift certificate for RV products during the Yankee Swap. And the world is going to the dogs as seen in this pic! Say cheese!
GIFFORD PINCHOT SP - OCTOBER Another lousy weekend regarding weather. All the weekends before and after Elk Neck were outstanding if not superb to include the one after this weekend. Late October and the temps were down to 35 degrees and it rained for 36 hours. Not a good time for the majority of the weekend but we managed. The other wrinkle was I never considered that pets were not allowed since Max is a new addition and the reservations were made six months back. So, once there it was a bit crazy. Fortunately there was a kennel (one out of four called) that could take him at the last minute. A few miles down the road with the ROO and we took care of that. Although Friday night was clear I forgot to take pics at the campfire since we believed Saturday night would clear up as per the weather report. It never did. Once again Nelson and Mary were there and you know them well by now! Me thinks this will be the last time at Gifford Pinchot until such time they work out their pet policy. I will miss the lake and huge sites.
THANKSGIVING - PINE GROVE KOA Well, It was finally time to crack the November camping barrier and we did it in style. Five nights (for me) in the wilds of Central PA and what a hoot. Only one day of really non-negotiable rainy weather. Chilly days and really cold nights. An empty campground still is fun!
NEW YEAR'S EVE - ELK NECK SP Finally. The last camping days of 2008. Alex and I headed out for five nights to hook up with 17 other families. Despite temps in the teens to mid-twenties on NYE as well as wind gusts of 40-60 MPH all day it still was worth it. We all learned a bit about winter camping and had a great time. I even got two days camping on board for 2009!
